Photo Books Overview

There are several types of photo books you can create with your photos. These can all be customized and saved so you do not have to finish them in one sitting. We also offer flipbooks. Wondering which photo book is right for you? See our Compare Photo Books chart to learn more about each style

  • Premier Lay-Flat Photo Books: Available in 8x8, 8x11, 11x14 and 12x12 up to 90 pages; lay-flat binding lets photos cross the spread seamlessly. Add photo captions or page titles and choose from our various photo layouts. Each book can have minimum of 20 and maximum of 90 double-sided pages with up to 15 pictures per side.

  • Custom Lay-Flat Photo Books: Custom Lay-Flat Photo Books are available in 8.5x11 and 11x14 sizes and are printed on archival-quality, acid-free lay-flat paper with a beautiful dull finish. These Photo Books support spread feature which allows a photo to be background and spread across the sheet. Each book can have minimum of 20 and maximum of 90 double-sided pages with up to 15 pictures per side.

  • Leather and Linen Photo Books: These Hard Bound Photo Books are available in sizes 8.5x11 and 5.5x7.5. Covers are linen or leather with a die-cut window to display a photo. Pages can be single or double-sided (there is no additional charge for double-sided pages). Each page can contain up to 15 pictures (the cover and title page can only contain one photo). Each book can be from 10 to 75 sheets (10 to 75 single-sided pages, or 20 to 150 double-sided pages).

Hard Bound Photo Books are bound using proven book-making methods and standards. The pages are printed on acid-free paper and side-sewn together using reinforced end sheets to ensure a strong, long-lasting book. The covers are constructed with high-quality linen or bonded leather material that meets industry requirements for strength and color durability. Hardbound Photo Book materials are Forestry Stewardship Council certified.

  • Hard Custom Cover Photo Books: Available in 8.5x11, 8x8 and 12x12 sizes, these hard-bound books feature your photos and captions printed directly on the high-gloss front and back covers and spine of the book. Like the other hard-bound styles, Custom Cover Photo Books can be from 10 to 75 sheets (10 to 75 single-sided pages, or 20 to 150 double-sided pages). Each page can be single or double-sided with up to 15 pictures per side. Custom Cover Hardbound Photo Book materials are Forestry Stewardship Council certified.

  • Soft Cover Photo Books: Similar to the Hard Cover Photo Book, these photo books can be single or double-sided with up to 15 pictures per page (only one picture on the cover and title page). Each book can be from 10 to 75 sheets. These books measure in sizes 5.5x7.5 and 8.5x11 inches and have paper covers that come in a variety of colors. We also offer a Soft Custom Cover Photo Book measuring 5x7, 8x8, and 8x11. All Soft Cover Photo Book materials are Forestry Stewardship Council certified.

  • Flipbooks: These are single sided books, with one photo per page. Flipbooks are printed on high-quality photographic paper and spiral bound with a heavyweight translucent cover. Each book must have at least 5 pages. You can add groups of 5 pages at a time, up to a maximum of 45 pages. Flipbooks are available in 4.25x6 and 5x7 sizes. You cannot save a flipbook as a project while you are building it, but you can reorder flipbooks you have already built.

  • 1-Hour In-Store Photo Books: You can create a 5x7 or 8x10 Hardbound Photo Book online and pick them up at your local Payless Daily store in just one hour. Begin by going to the Photo Books page and then select one of the 1-Hour pick-up sizes before you start making your photo book.

1-Hour Photo Books have 40 pages (20 single-sided sheets) printed on high-quality paper with a staple binding. You'll choose the cover color at the store based on availability. 8x10 1-Hour books have a die-cut window on the cover, but the 5x7 book has a solid cover.

Each of the 1-Hour Photo Book sizes are available for 1-Hour in-store pick-up only.

  • Same-Day Linen Cover Photo Book: You can create an 8x11 Linen Photo Book online and pick it up at your local Payless Daily store in less than four hours. Same Day Books include 40 double-sided pages printed on high-quality paper. There are two cover color choices to choose from, Tan or Black.

  • Individual Mini Photo Book: Individual Mini Photo Books require 24 photos for the body and one photo for the cover. Each page fits a single photo, which will fill the entire page without a margin. If you choose less than 25 total photos, the rest of the pages in your Individual Mini Photo Books will be left blank. Individual Mini Photo Books measure 2 ¾x3 ¾ inches.

Photo Orientation for Books

Photo Books and Flipbooks are designed in a landscape (horizontal) or square format, but can accommodate both types of photos.
  • Photo Books (hardbound and softbound) can have different layouts on each page to accommodate a variety of photos.
  • Mini Photo Books feature landscape-oriented images that bleed to the edges of the page, so vertical photos will be automatically cropped to fit the page. We recommend only using landscape-oriented photos for Mini Photo Books.
  • For Flipbooks, portrait (vertical) photos will be reduced in size to fit on the landscape page.

Now for the real fun - customizing and designing your photo book!

Adding Photos
Create beautiful pages by adding photos anywhere!

First, you'll be asked if you'd like Autofill to automatically place all of your photos in your book for you. Don't worry, you can always rearrange them again once they've been placed.

Next, click the "Photos" tab on the left side to see all of the photos you've chosen for your book. There are two easy ways to add photos to your pages:
  1. Click on a photo and drag it to any of the empty "Drag Photo Here" boxes in your photo book.
  2. To add an additional picture to your layout, drag and drop a photo onto any page background.
Note: If you see an orange triangle on a photo you've placed, that means it's low resolution. You can use the photo in your book, but it might look grainy or pixelated in the printed version. We recommend trying a different page layout or using the edit tool to zoom out so the photo is the best resolution for printing.

Removing Photos or Text
Deleting photos or text is easy. Select the photo or text you want to remove, and when the menu appears below it, click on the trash can icon on the right side to delete it.
Tip!
Changed your mind? Just click "Undo" in the photo book toolbar to have the photo or text added back to the page.

Move, Resize, and Tilt Photos or Text
You can easily create the page layouts you want by moving, resizing, and tilting your photos or text.
  1. Click on the photo or text you want to work with.
  2. While the photo or text is selected:
    • Tilt and rotate by holding down the rotate handle above it and turning it.
    • Move the photo or text by dragging it anywhere, including the opposite page.
    • Resize the photo or text by dragging any of the resize handles in or out.

Layer Photos
Have more fun by creatively layering photos! You can overlap photos to make custom collages and choose which photos appear in front. To layer photos, drag and drop photos to a page and arrange them with the move, resize, and tilt features. Then select which photos will be in front by using the menu under that photo. Click the "Bring to Front" icon or the "Send to Back" icon to move the photo behind or in front of other images.

Tip!
Text can be put on top of your layered photos.

Shuffle Photos
Play around with new possibilities by shuffling your photos!

A shuffle icon appears in the menu at the top of every photo book page. Click the "Shuffle Photos" icon and watch as your photos move to new positions on the page. You can move, resize, or tilt your photos after any shuffle to customize a layout.
Tip!
Changed your mind? Just click the "Undo" icon in the photo book toolbar to go back to a previous shuffle layout.

Choose or Change Page Layout
We offer over 80 page layout designs for use on individual book pages, and they can be applied to any page except for the first page of books with a die-cut window on the cover. There are 2 ways to apply a layout to a page in your book:

  1. Click "Layouts" in the left menu.
  2. The layouts are organized by number of photos and include some for text only. Expand the various sections depending on the number of photos you want on the page and click the type of layout you want.
  3. To apply the layout to every page in your book, click the option "Apply to all" otherwise, drag the layout onto an individual page. Any text and photos already on the page (or pages) will adapt to the new layout.

From the "Gallery" menu
  1. The new "Gallery" option just above the page in the single page or facing pages views, provides layouts based on the number of photos you already have on the page, so it is best to add your photos first.
  2. Then click "Gallery". Your current design is shown in the center and the layouts are organized by Design style at the top of the page. Click a Design style to narrow down your choices.
  3. Click the arrows on either side the design being shown to thumb through the various designs.

  • You can add as many text boxes as you like to each page.
  • Once you've placed a layout on a page, you can modify it further by using the FreeStyler features to move, stretch, tilt or layer photos and text.

Adding Text
Have fun with words by adding as many text boxes as you want to a page. You can even put text on top of your pictures. Choose from 20 stylish fonts in over 200 different colors.

There are two ways to add text:
  1. To add standalone text, click the "T" icon that appears in the menu above every photo book page. A text box will be added to the middle of the page and you can move it wherever you like.
  2. To add a caption to a photo, click on the "T" icon that appears in the menu under any selected photo. This text box is connected to the photo. You can move, resize, or tilt the text into any position, but if you move the photo, the caption will move with it.
Tip!
You can resize the text box to fit more text.

Editing Text
To edit text, select the text box you want to change. You can either click on the Edit Text icon in the menu below it or double click on the text box itself. Both actions will open the Edit Text window.

Choose the font, size, color, and text alignment. The maximum number of characters allowed will depend on the font size and the size of the text box. Click "Apply Changes" to return to the photo book.

Please note that for now, only one font type and one font color can be used per text box.
Tip!
Layer text boxes together in the same font to create dimension. Make the top font one color and the back font a darker hue.

Please note that any text or photos that fall outside of the printable area may be trimmed and may not appear in the book you order. For best results, keep your photos and text inside the dashed red lines on every page.
